Character Name: Marco Bodt
Character Canon: Attack on Titan
History: Marco was born and raised in a city close to Wall Rose, and his childhood was uneventful. He lived with his family, and he was unaffected by the Titan’s attack on Zhiganshina and Wall Maria. He knew what happened, of course. It was hard not to hear of the walls that had stood for a hundred years being breached, and that refugees were fleeing to within Wall Rose in an attempt to be eaten.
But Marco was safe and secure in his town, and at twelve he enlisted and moved to the Trost district, hellbent on joining the Military Police and directly serving the king. In order for him to apply for a position in the Military Police he had to rank within the top ten out of his fellow trainees, so for the next three years of his life he threw himself into his training. A lot of people didn’t make it, but Marco did, and he forged several close bonds with his fellow trainees. At the end of his training, he was ranked eight out of ten, and he could take his place on the Military Police.
And then on the day before he would leave and join the Police, Trost’s gate was destroyed by the Colossal Titan who had broken down Shiganshina’s gate five years ago.
Titans filed into the city, and Marco joined the fight against them just like every other trainee and soldier stationed in Trost. He managed to survive the initial, thanks largely to Eren Jaeger’s inexplicable transformation into a titan and the other boy taking out most of the remaining titans. Following Eren’s transformation and then capture, Marco regrouped with his fellow trainees, his plans for the future put on hold in order to deal with more pressing concerns, like the fact that the titans could possibly breach Wall Rose cut down the livable land once more.
When it was decided Eren would block the hole in Trost’s gate, Marco was stationed guarding the wall, and serving as a last line of defense. Unfortunately for Marco, he didn’t survive until the end of the fight. Three days after the hole was blocked and the titans in Trost killed, his corpse was found and he was put on the funeral pyre with the rest of the soldiers who did not survive.
AU History: Marco was born to a family of that worked in the Agricultural Tower, and grew up close to the Industrial district. He had about as normal a childhood as you could get, and he spent much of his time with the other children who lived who lived in the same tower as him.
He did not know he was Enlightened for a very, very long time. It wasn’t a surprise to him - after all, his grandmother had been Enlightened, so he knew he had the chance for that, but it wasn’t until he was 15 - already intently studying so he could be a member of the Swords of the Savior, so he could serve Union as best as he could - that he learned that he had, in fact, inherited Enlightenment from his grandmother. It probably would have been an exciting thing, to know he had a link the the Savior, but instead it was a terrible time for Marco. He had given his parents, and several of his friends, nightmares of him dead, dying, of being a corpse on the ground, and he felt terribly guilty about that. It was a guilt he would never quite be able to shake, and it tampered his desire to join the Swords of the Savior.
He never gave up on his dream, and to this day he still wants to protect and serve and help the people of Union, but he’s taken up a position as a Guard. At least until he can get better control over the whole….given people terrible nightmares thing.
Canon Personality: Marco is known for his kindness. He’s a gentle, kind soul, and that sets him apart from his fellow trainees in many ways. He’s got a smile for everyone, and he’s quietly supportive of everyone he works with. He has lofty goals, yes, but his dream is to serve and help others. He wants to serve his king - he doesn’t want to get far away from the frontlines, or save his own skin. He wants to work and serve and be the best he can be, but he wants everyone else to be their best too.
A lot of who Marco is can be seen in his friendship with Jean Kirschtein. He and the other boy are from different cities, but they became fast friends, and it’s through their friendship that you can really see just how kind and selfless Marco is. He acts as a balance for Jean, keeping him from getting into fights as best he can, and soothing his anger. He’s a bit like a barracks mom, being supportive of all the other trainees, but he keeps closest tabs on Jean. It’s more unusual to see the two apart than to see them apart, and what Marco wants most is to see Jean be happy and confident.
He doesn’t take kindly to people doubting themselves, at all. He’s a guiding force to people who have lost themselves, and he’s not afraid to be blunt. He still tries to be nice about things, but he doesn’t sugar coat much and he says what needs to be said. When the titans break into Trost, Jean begins doubting himself and his ability to lead, but Marco is quick to encourage him. As far as he’s concerned, Jean’s decisions are why he was able to survive for as long as he did, while more experienced soldiers fell in battle. He doesn’t hesitate to tell Jean that he understands weakness, which might be considered rude to some people, because why would you just tell that they’re weak? But it manages to motivate Jean, because Marco knows what needs to be said better than most people do.
He knows how to help, and he’s not afraid to ask for it, either. It’s common knowledge that he would work alongside Armin Arlert, and that the two would work on upkeep for their 3DMG together. He would offer anyone a helping hand, not just Jean, and he was well known among the trainees for his kindness. He’s not a pushover by any means, and he still worked hard in his training. He was motivated by the desire to serve the king, because he wanted that sort of honor. He wanted to serve and work to make things better, and he pushed himself in order to rank high enough to fulfill his dream. He would help others along the way, but he wanted his own future and he didn’t want to be held back.
Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to reap the fruits of his labors, dying before he could stop and think about what his future would be. The titans breaking in changed things for Marco, but he wasn’t going to back down. While he wasn’t necessarily fearless - because who wouldn’t be scared by giants that were eating the people you had spent the past three years with? - he managed to keep his cool, unlike many of the people who were in Trost during the invasion. Marco is calm and level-headed, and he’s quick on his feet. While he might not have been the most intelligent, or the most skilled, he was a calm, soothing presence, and he trusted those around him and those leading him to do their best and to make sure as many people survived as they could. He fought the titans and he never lost hope, which set him apart from several of the trainees, considering at least one trainee committed suicide during the attack. He was able to push aside his fears and make it through the invasion, and if it wasn’t for his 3DMG being stolen in his next venture out, he probably would have survived for quite a while because he was one of the few that didn’t seem to fall apart in the face of death.
All in all, Marco Bodt is a pretty straightforward person who died before he could make much of a difference. He is gentle and kind, while at the same time being firm and blunt. He’s one of the best people you can have on your side, because he will believe in you until the end and he’ll do what he needs to in order to make you believe in yourself, too.
AU Deviation: Marco is still the same as he was at his core. He is still kind and supportive of his friends, and he still wants to serve. However, there’s a big difference between a world where you join the army at 12 and spend a good portion of your adolescence training to fight, and growing up in a place like Union. Somehow, Marco is even more calm and relaxed than he was before, and there’s less urgency. He’s more prone to teasing his friends, and he has a better sense of humor. He’s not very serious at all anymore, and he feels like the problems that face him and his friends aren’t as pressing as they could be. He doesn’t feel like he’s in any sort of immediate danger, and that most people he knows should just take a step back, breathe, and take life easier. Marco is fond of jokes and pranks, now, when before such a thing is practically heard of, because everything was so life or death.
Canon Abilities: Marco doesn’t have powers of the supernatural flavor, but he does have a few things going for him. He was ranked 7 out of a graduating class of at least fifty, with exceptional scores in three-dimensional maneuver. Essentially, this means he has awesome control over his body at all times and doesn’t suffer from motion sickness and is totally down with flying around on cables. He also had intensive combat training and survival training.
Enlightened Abilities: Mastery of Training, Ghost.
His abilities largely manifested as illusions (think Night Shade) or afflicting nightmares, but as he levels and evolves he gains more control over shadows (moves akin to Shadow Sneak, Shadow Claw, etc), eventually manifesting in his third “evolution” as being able to actually disappear into shadows and move around through them (similar to Phantom Force).
He’ll also suffer through some extreme physical changes, and eventually he will wind up incorporeal and skeletal…or at least missing his entire right side, as an homage to the very first hallucination he caused. He would be incapable of actual flight, but he could levitate a foot off the ground and then float through walls because he, he’s not solid anymore, so does he really need to use doors anymore?
Starter Pokémon: A Duskull named Charm.
Notes/Special Considerations: No specific notes or anything I can think of right now.

(NOTE: You may link a previous entry or thread, including testrun or musebox threads (but NOT Dear Mun), for one or both samples. However, we want to see the character in the setting of Brave New World and specifically in their AU for at least one sample.)
First-Person: [It’s not often that he feels the need to post on public channels. It’s not that he’s really a private person, or that he has nothing to say, he just...doesn’t make the time to post. But today, today he is bored and has nothing better to do.]
Hey, everyone. I hope you’re all doing okay! And that your pokemon are okay too, of course. [He grins brightly as he shifts, getting more comfortable at his post.]
I’m doing fine, but...it gets boring being a guard sometimes? And lonely. Not that I want for anything dangerous to happen! Nothing like that, it’s good to know that we’re all...safe and protected. Still, it can get kind of…[He waves his hands, not really sure how to word how he feels.]
Anyways, I was wondering about doing something. I feel like we could all use a day, or night, to relax, and I remembered something I heard about once! Something called a haunted house, where you go in and get scared on purpose? Kind of weird, but...I don’t know. Would anyone be interested in something like that?
Third-Person: Sometimes, he wondered what it was like outside of Union. It was a common thought, he believed. Who wouldn’t wonder what it would be like? If there was anything else that was safe, that had humans, that was doing their best to survive the changing of the worlds. He wondered, but he knew that he would never leave. He had a duty, and he would never leave his post as a Guard.
Protecting the people as something he had always wanted to do, and even if now it seemed like he was unsure of eventually, some day, joining the Swords of the Savior...He could never stop doing his best to protect the city he held dear. Still, he wondered, and sometimes he even debated venturing outside of the walls. There was a risk to going outside, he knew, but he also knew about the other pokemon out there, and he had heard about what it looked like. A part of him wanted to see it for himself, but he wasn’t sure if that would be the best for him and Charm. The outside...it was a distraction. There were very real things to worry about, with his family, and his friends, and his duty as a Guard, and making sure humanity would continue to survive. He may have been Enlightened, but...that didn’t mean he could leave. He had to focus on the needs of others. They were important, and he was happy here. It was just curiosity, nothing more.
Maybe someday he would go out and train and explore, but for now...he was happy with his life in Union. Maybe he had started looking at the walls more often, now. Maybe he was more curious, now.
Maybe he should stop zoning out in the middle of the street before someone runs into him.
